Bed Bugs: A CDC Health Advisory

Bed bugs are not classified as a disease carrying pest, however, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has released a health advisory. Why? The CDC has a concern about misuse involving pesticides for bed bug control.  They have joined up with The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) to notify everyone about the dangers these pesticides could be causing.  It has been brought to their attention that people have either been using outdoor pesticides for indoor use, overusing pesticides, or simply not following the proper instructions on the label on how to correctly use the pesticide.

With the increase in the number of bed bug-related inquiries received by the National Pesticide Information Center (NPIC) over the last few years, many people have been trying to defeat these pest themselves and doing so incorrectly.  In between January 2006- December 2010 the NPIC has received 169 calls due to these misuses.  Of those 169 calls, 129 resulted in mild or serious health effects (one death).
