Surrounding the allure of summer picnics and the beautiful landscapes this  [mosquito] region has to offer is a presence that we are all too familiar with.  As temperatures rise steadily above 50F here in northeast Ohio, mosquitoes  begin to plague our area year after year.  Their bites are not only a nuisance but they can also be dangerous.

Mosquitoes Spread Disease

The word mosquito is derived from the Spanish word for “little flies.”  But unlike flies mosquitoes can infect people with disease such as:

  • West Nile Virus (WNV)
  • Encephalitis (SLE), (LAC), or (EEE)
  • Dengue
  • Malaria
  • Heart worm (in dogs and cats)

Protect Yourself from Biting Mosquitoes

  • Mosquitoes don’t like sunlight and are most active from dusk till dawn, so avoid being outdoors during these times.
  • Wear light colored clothing (pants and long sleeves)
  • Use repellents
  • Avoid perfumes and scented soaps
