Steps for Preventing Bed Bugs at Home & While Traveling.

Becoming informed and taking precautions to prevent bed bugs from becoming an issue in your home is the first and most important step to managing bed bugs.  hotel bed bugs

  • Familiarize yourself with what they look like and what to look for when inspecting a room while traveling, such as keeping bags and suitcases off of the floor. An option is to place them in the bathtub while inspecting.
  • Always inspect bags upon returning home; if you suspect Bed Bugs, wash and place clothing in the dryer on high heat.
  • Leave bags outside and if possible and steam them prior to bringing inside.
  • Minimize clutter in your home and vacuum regularly.

What If I Suspect That I Have Bed Bugs?

If you or someone in your household is being bit, inspect the bite.  Bed bugs typically feed in a cluster pattern or a line of three bites called “breakfast, lunch and dinner.”  Bites are typically red with a dark spot in the middle.

  • Inspect the mattress for bugs or fecal stains.  Concentrating on the seams.
  • Install a bed bug monitor device near & under the legs of beds and couches.
  • Contact a pest control professional to perform a through inspection.

What is the Next Step if I Have Bed Bugs?

It is important to keep in mind that although bed bugs are a nuisance, they are not a dangerous or disease carrying insect.

Options include combinations of  Heat, Steam, and Chemicals with residual and non-residuals. Once the situation is assessed, the right prescription can be planned for elimination. Unfortunately, they are very difficult to eradicate and is best left to pest control management professional. After an evaluation, your inspector will be able to discuss the options and help determine the most effective method to control the infestation.  They also can educate you on how to avoid re-infestation.
